Union Cabinet Approves the Extension of PMAY-U

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban): The Union Cabinet recently approved the proposal of Ministry of Housing Affairs (MoHUA) for the extension of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY-U)  till December, 2024.

Key Highlights:

  • The (PMAY-U)-Housing for All Mission was launched in June 2015.
  • The original deadline for the scheme, which aimed at providing pucca houses to all eligible urban beneficiaries, was March 2022.
  • This scheme has been extended on the request of the States amd UTs.
  • It will help in completion of already sanctioned houses under Beneficiary Led Construction, Affordable Housing in Partnership, and In-situ Slum Redevelopment verticals.
  • The scheme will also help in the completion of already sanctioned 122.69 lakh houses by March 31, 2022.
  • Now, under the extension, Rs 85406 crore will be provided till December 31, 2022.

About (PMAY-U):

  • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) is a flagship Mission of Government of India (GoI).
  • It was launched on 25th June 2015.
  • It is being implemented by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
  • The scheme is being implemented under four pillars-
  1. Beneficiary Led Construction/Enhancement (BLC)
  2. Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP)
  3. In-situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR) and
  4. Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS)
  • The main aim of the scheme is to provide all weather pucca houses to all eligible beneficiaries in the urban areas of the country through States/UTs/Central Nodal Agencies.
  • The scheme covers the entire urban area of the country, i.e., all statutory towns as per Census 2011 and towns notified subsequently, including Notified Planning/ Development Areas.
  • While Govt of India provides financial assistance, State Govt/UTs implement the scheme including selection of beneficiaries.

Central assistance for the scheme:

  • Central Assistance approved since 2015 is 2.03 lakh crore against 20,000 crore rupees in 2004-2014.
  • Upto 31st March 2022, Central Assistance/subsidy of ₹1,18,020.46 crore has already been released.
  • Now, ₹85,406 crore will be released as Central Assistance/subsidy till 31st December 2024.
