PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission

Launched in October 2021 with a view to strengthening healthcare infrastructure across India the PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) was recently in news when World Bank announced the extension of 2 complimentary loans of 500 million USD each to India to support the scheme. 

With a budget of Rs.64,180 crore, the PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission has three aspects: strengthening public health institutions, building an IT-enabled disease surveillance system, and expanding research on infectious diseases.

The Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission is one of the largest pan-India health schemes for strengthening healthcare infrastructure. 

PM-ABHIM aims to fill the critical gaps in public health infrastructure, especially in critical care facilities and primary care in urban and rural areas.

The World Bank has announced the extension of 2 complimentary loans of 500 million USD each to India to support the PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission. 

One of these loans will prioritize healthcare services in 7 states – Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Meghalaya, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. 

The $500 million Public Health Systems for Pandemic Preparedness Program  (PHSPP) will support the government’s efforts to improve epidemic surveillance for reporting epidemics, Enhance India’s capacity to detect pathogens and strengthen coordination

The $500 million Enhanced Health Service Delivery Program (EHSDP) will support Government’s efforts to strengthen service delivery Improve quality of care and transform health sector governance.

Who started PMABHIM?

The Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission was launched in Varanasi by PM Modi. It was launched in 2021 with an outlay of Rs 64,180 crores over six years. The aim was to make the health infrastructure of the country more resilient.

Life expectancy

India’s life expectancy is at 69.8 in 2020, up from 58 in 1990. The countrys life expectancy is higher than the average for the country’s income level, according to World Bank.

The under-five mortality rate (36 per 1,000 live births), infant mortality rate (30 per 1,000 live births), and maternal mortality ratio (103 per 100,000 live births) are all close to the average for India’s income level.
