National Consumer Day observed on December 24


Every year the National Consumer Day is observed on December 24 in India. The day is celebrated to highlight the importance of the consumer movement and spread awareness about the rights and responsibilities of every consumer.

On this day, the President of India had given his assent to the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

In August 2019, the Consumer Protection Act 2019 was passed by parliament. It came into force in July 2020 and replaced the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.

World Consumer Rights Day
• The World Consumer Rights Day is observed on March 15 annually.

• Both World Consumer Rights Day and National Consumer Day have similar motives but they are observed on different dates.

Consumer protection act 2019
The Consumer Protection Act 2019 was passed by Parliament, in August 2019. This act replaced the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 and came into force in July 2020. The Act led to the constitution of Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) for protecting the rights of consumers by cracking down on unfair trade practices
Consumer Rights in India

The Consumer Protection Act guarantees 6 basic rights to the customers:

  1. Right to Safety
  2. Right to be Informed
  3. Right to Choose
  4. Right to be Heard
  5. Right to Seek redressal and
  6. Right to Consumer Education.

Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA)

Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) was established under Section 10(1) of Consumer Protection Act, 2019. It was constituted with the aim of protecting the rights of consumer by cracking down on unfair trade practices, and false & misleading advertisements, which are detrimental to the interests of public and consumers. Headquartered in Delhi, CCPA is empowered to:

  1. Conduct investigations into violations of consumer rights.
  2. Order recall of unsafe goods and services.
  3. Order discontinuance of unfair trade practices & misleading advertisements.
  4. Impose penalties on manufacturers or publishers or endorsers of misleading advertisements.

Structure of CCPA

  1. Chief Commissioner as head,
  2. Two other commissioners as members. One of them deals with matters related to goods while other looks into cases related to services.
  3. CCPA will also comprise of an Investigation Wing, which will be headed by a Director General.
  4. District Collectors will also be given the power to investigate complaints of violations of consumer rights.
