National Capital Regional Transport Corporation unveils coaches of India’s first rapid rail for Delhi-Meerut corridor


Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Corridor: The National Capital Regional Transport Corporation (NCRTC) recently unveiled the first coach of rapid rail of India for the Delhi-Meerut corridor.

Key Details:

  • The deliveries of these semi-high-speed aerodynamic trainsets with dispersed power will begin in the following months.
  • The Savli manufacturing factory will deliver a total of 210 cars for the first Regional Rapid Transit System corridor.
  • The entire 82-kilometre Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS route, which will have 25 stations in total, is now under construction.
  • The train is expected to be traversing the tracks by March 2023, covering five stations between Sahibabad, in Ghaziabad District of Uttar Pradesh to Duhai in Uttar Pradesh.

About Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Corridor:

  • The Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) train with a design speed of 180 kmph will run on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor.
  • It consists of train sets that provide regional and local transit services in Meerut along the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut line.
  • The NCRTC in 2022 will start the trial runs on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor’s Priority Section.
  • It will be available every 5 – 10 minutes and will cover a distance of 82 km in just 55 minutes.
  • The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is expected to minimize carbon dioxide emissions by 2,50,000 tonnes per year.
  • The RRTS corridor between Delhi and Ghaziabad is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2,50,000 tonnes per year.

Features of RRTS train:

  • The new RRTS train is an entirely new design of train designed to provide passengers with a good travelling experience.
  • It has been designed to have a setting resembling the one on an aircraft.
  • The coaches will be equipped with modern features including wide standing space, CCTV cameras, dynamic route maps,  sockets for laptop and mobile charging,  auto control ambient lighting system and heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, vending machine facility and other amenities.
  • The RRTS train will also be the first in the country to have a business or ‘premium’ coach on a regional corridor.
  • The train will be capable of accommodating 1500 passengers at once.
  • It is also capable of achieving three times the speed of a metro.

Background:

  • Phase 1 of manufacturing of the train started back in 2021 and is now nearing the testing and trial phase to be done by the end of this year.
