MoFPI and Nafed launches six One District One Product brands


ODOP brands under Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro food processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme.

ODOP Brands under PMFME Scheme: Union Minister for Ministry of Food Processing Industries  Pashupati Kumar Paras and Minister of State, Prahlad Singh Patel and senior officials of National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED) recently launched 6, One District One Product (ODOP) brands under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro food processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme.

Key Highlights:

  • An agreement was signed by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) with NAFED for developing 10 brands of selected ODOPs under the branding and marketing component of the PMFME scheme.
  • Out of these, six brands namely Kashmiri Mantra, Madhu Mantra, Amrit Phal, Cori Gold, Somdana, and Whole Wheat Cookies of Dilli Bakes were launched recently at Panchsheel Bhawan in New Delhi.

About the brands:

  1. Brand Kashmiri Mantra brings out the essence of spices from Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
  2. Brand Madhu Mantra has been developed under the ODOP concept for honey from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
  3. The brand Amrit Phal for amla juice has been exclusively developed under the ODOP concept for Gurugram, Haryana.
  4. Cori Gold brand has been developed for coriander powder which is the identified ODOP for Kota, Rajasthan.
  5. Brand Somdana has been developed under the ODOP concept of milletsfrom Thane, Maharashtra.
  6. Whole wheat cookies, is the second product developed under the brand Dilli Bakes.

About NAFED:

  • National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) was established on Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October 1958.
  • It is registered under the Multi State Co-operative Societies Act.
  • It was setup with the object to promote co-operative marketing of agricultural produce to benefit the farmers.

Members:

  • The main members of NAFED are the agricultural farmers who have the authority in the form of members of the General Body in the working of the body.

About PMFME Scheme:

  • PMFME Scheme is a centralized sponsored scheme.
  • (PMFME stands for Pradhan Mantri Formalization of Micro food processing Enterprises)
  • It was launched on June 29, 2020 under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and 'Vocal for Local' campaigns.
  • Its nodal Ministry is Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI).
  • This scheme was launched to provide technical, financial and business support to micro food processing units in the country.
  • It will be implemented over a 5 year period from 2020-21 to 2024-25. 
  • The government intends to provide direct financial and technical assistance to about 200,000 micro food processing units under this scheme.

Aim:

  • The aim of the scheme is as follows:
  • To enhance the competitiveness of existing individual micro-enterprises in the unorganized segment of the food processing industry.
  • To promote formalization of the sector.
  • To promote formalization of the sector and provide support to Farmer Producer Organizations, Self Help Groups, and Producers Cooperatives along their entire value chain.

Major component of the scheme:

  • Its major component is One District One Product (ODOP) Approach.
  • Under the ODOP component of the PMFME Scheme the States would identify food products for districts keeping in view the existing clusters and availability of raw material.
  • The ODOP could be a perishable produce based or cereal based or a food item widely produced in an area. E.g. pickle, mango, potato, millet based products, fisheries, poultry, etc.
