Tension has gripped several parts of Manipur recently after a solidarity march organised by a tribal students’ union,  the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM), to oppose the demand for inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.
 
The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM ) is an influential tribal body representing the Naga and Kuki communities. Naga and Kuki are  Manipur’s two major tribal communities.

The Meiteis have accused the Kukis of violence and vice versa.

Meitei people

The Meitei people , also known as the Manipuri people, are the predominant ethnic group of Manipur .

The Meiteis speak Meitei language (officially called Manipuri), one of the 22 official languages of the Indian Republic and the sole official language of Manipur. 

Meitei ethnic group represents about 64% of Manipur's population.

Clans: Meiteis are divided into clans, the members of which do not intermarry.

Meities comprise 64 per cent of Manipur’s population. They occupy 10 per cent of the state's territory as non-tribals are not allowed to buy land in notified hill areas.
