The birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jayanti was recently observed on 11 April. This great social reformer, thinker, philosopher and writer was born on the same day in 1827 in Maharashtra. 

Mahatma Phule is widely respected as a champion of social justice and source of hope for countless people and worked tirelessly for social equality, women empowerment and boosting education. 

Jyotiba Phule was born on April 11, 1827 in Poona (Now Pune) to a family that belonged to the Mali caste.

Mahatma Jyotiba along with her wife, Savitribai Phule, established several schools for the uplift of the untouchables and women. 

Mahatma Phule started schools for girls and raised his voice against female infanticide and also carried out campaigns to solve water crisis.

Critical of the prevailing Hindu religion and custom at that time Mahatma Jyotiba underscored the need to “save the lower castes from the hypocritical Brahmins and their opportunistic scriptures.” 

To make the depressed classes conscious of their rights, Mahatma Jyotiba and her wife founded the Satya Sodhak Samaj in 1873.  Gulamgiri and Sarvajanik Satyadharma Pustak are famous works written by Jyotiba Phule.
