About Khajuraho

  • The Khajuraho temples located in the state of Madhya Pradesh have been declared World Heritage site by UNESCO.
  • Situated in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho’s claim to world fame lies in the magnificent temples built by the mighty Rajput rulers of Chandela dynasty who ruled the modern Bundelkhand region from 950 AD to 1203 AD.
  • During the 10th and 11th century AD the territory of Jejakabhukti or modern Bundelkhand was ruled by the Rajput rulers of the Chandella dynasty under whom a great school of architecture flourished. The finest specimen of the architecture is a group of temples at Khajuraho.

The Chandela rulers were prolific builders who built not 1 but 85 temples at Khajuraho. However, only 22 of the original 85 now survive. After the decline of the Chandela rule before the onslaught of the invading armies of the Delhi Sultanate, these monuments fell into neglect.

The Khajuraho temples, dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and the Jain Tirthankaras, are widely known not only for their architectural grandeur but also for the intricacy and profusion of sculptural embellishments on both exterior and interior walls. The most famous of the temples is the Kandariya Mahadev.

Chandela Dynasty

  • The Chandella dynasty ruled during the 10th and 11th century AD the territory of Jejakabhukti or modern Bundelkhand.
  • The name of the Chandellas kingdom Jejakabhukti was named after the one of the early Chandella rulers known as Jeja or Jejjaka.
  • The Chandella were once the feudatories of the Partiharas of Kanauj.
  • Parmardi or Parmal (c1165-1203) was one of the most important Chandella kings. He  was killed and Qutb-ud-din Aibak occupied Mahoba.
