Jal Jeevan Mission Provides Tap Water To 12 Crore Rural Households

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) has achieved another milestone of providing tap water supply to twelve crore rural households. 

Jal Jeevan Mission is a central government initiative under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. It aims to ensure access of piped water for every household in India.

Jal Jeevan Mission was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15th August, 2019, with the aim to provide assured tap water supply to every rural home by 2024

At the announcement of the Mission, out of 19 crore 27 lakh households only three crore 23 lakh households in the country had tap water connections.

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) by 2024 to all households in rural India.

Jal Shakti Ministry said, as on date, five States and three Union Territories have reported 100 percent coverage.

These states and UTs are Goa, Telangana, Haryana, Gujarat, Punjab, Puducherry, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The Ministry said the relentless efforts of the Union and State governments have also resulted in ensuring the provision of tap water supply in over nine lakh schools and nine lakh 39 thousand Anganwadi centres in the country.

Vision

Every rural household has drinking water supply in adequate quantity of prescribed quality on regular and long-term basis at affordable service delivery charges leading to improvement in living standards of rural communities.

Objectives

The broad objectives of the Jal Jeevan Mission are:

• To provide FHTC to every rural household.

• To bring awareness on various aspects and significance of safe drinking water
