India Posts Best ever Result at the 2023 World University Games

India finished at seventh spot with 11 gold, 5 silver and 10 bronze in the FISU World University Games 2023 standings. The 31st edition of the World University Games (formerly known as the Universiade) was held in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China, from July 28 to August 8.

India’s previous best performance at the World University Games came at Gwangju 2015, where Indian athletes won five medals – one gold, one silver and three bronze.

In 2019 World University Games were held in Naples. India have been part of the World University Games since the inaugural edition at Turin in 1959.

Rifle shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, a Tokyo Olympian, was the most successful Indian athlete at World University Games with four medals. 

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar won gold medals in men’s 10m air rifle and 50m rifle 3 positions and was part of gold medal-winning men’s 10m air rifle team. He also won a bronze with the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions team.

Youth Olympic Games champion Manu Bhaker and Sift Kaur Samra also won multiple gold medals. Manu Bhaker bagged gold medals in the women’s 10m air pistol individual as well as the team event. Sift Kaur Samra mirrored Manu’s success in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions.

Host China topped the standings with a whopping 178 medals followed by Japan and Republic of Korea.

The next edition of the World University Games is slated to take place in 2025 in Germany.
