India Open 2022: Lakshya wins maiden Super 500 title


India Open 2022: India’s badminton player Lakshya Sen, on January 16, 2022, secured his maiden Super 500 title by winning “Yonex-Sunrise India Open”.

Key Highlights:

  • Lakshya secured the title with a stunning straight-game victory over reigning world champion from Singapore, Loh Kean Yew in the men’s singles final.
  • The 20-year-old Sen gained victory over Yew in straight games 24-22, 21-17.
  • He had claimed his maiden world championships medal with a bronze in Spain in December 2021.
  • The 2022 India Open (badminton), officially Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2022, was held at the K. D. Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi, India, from 11 to 16 January 2022.
  • In the doubles’ final, top doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won against three-time world champions Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan from Indonesia.

  • The India Open is an annual badminton event which has been held in India since 2008.
  • It is a BWF World Tour Super 500 Grade international badminton tournament.
  • The inaugural event was held in 2007 in Hyderabad, but was cancelled amid Hyderabad bombings.
  • The first three editions of the India Open were designated as Grand Prix Gold events.
  • In 2011, it was upgraded to the BWF Superseries tournament.
  • Since then until 2019, it was held annually at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, New Delhi.

  • Badminton World Federation (BWF) is the international governing body for the sport of badminton recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
  • It was founded on 5 July 1934 as the International Badminton Federation with nine member nations namely, Canada, England, Denmark, Ireland, France, New Zealand, Netherlands, Wales and Scotland.
