India beat Pakistan to win Men’s Junior Asia Cup hockey final

The Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team beat arch rival Pakistan 2-1 in a thrilling Final match of the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 here in Salalah, Oman. Indian team successfully defended its title. 

Playing in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Salalah Sports Complex, India remained in command of the game thanks to the early goals by Angad Bir Singh (13’) and Araijeet Singh Hundal (20’). Angad Bir Singh’s strike in the 13th minute helped India get on the scoresheet.
Some outstanding saves by goalkeeper Shashikumar Mohith Honnenahalli kept India in the lead throughout the match.

India captain Uttam Singh was awarded the Player of the Match.

With this victory, India has created a new record of winning the maximum titles at the Men’s Junior Asia Cup. This was India’s fourth title at Men's Junior Asia Cup, having won it previously in 2004, 2008 and 2015. Pakistan has won the tournament in 1988, 1992, 1996 becoming the second-most successful team in the tournament with three titles but their last win came 27 years ago in 1996.

In the semi-finals, India trounced the Republic of Korea 9-1 while Pakistan defeated Malaysia 6-2.

The Men's Junior Asia Cup hockey tournament in Oman was held after eight years. The 2021 edition was cancelled due to COVID-19.
