Bihu or Bohag Bihu is the most important festival of the people of Assam and is celebrated in mid-April to welcome spring season. 

Marking the beginning of Assamese New Year and onset of the harvesting season, Bohag Bihu is celebrated over 7 days with great enthusiasm in Assam. This year it is being celebrated from April 14-20.

How Bohag Bihu is celebrated over 7 days

The first day or Garu Bihu is dedicated to cattle. Cattle rites are performed on the first day, and homage is paid to elders, relatives and friends on the second day with a special Bihu delicacy. The third day is set apart for religious services. The third day is called Guxai Bihu, dedicated to worshipping household deities. 

The fourth day is called Taator Bihu or Bihu for the handlooms. The fifth day is known as Nangolor Bihu, dedicated to farm equipment, while the sixth day is called Gharosia Jibar Bihu, which is celebrated for domestic animals. The  seventh and last day is called 'Chera bihu' which is celebrated with great grandeur and much enthusiasm. 

Games and sports, special Bihu songs and dances, fairs, etc., are a part of the Bihu celebrations. 

Bihu is celebrated thrice in a year. The Assamese also celebrate Magh Bihu in January, and Kati Bihu in October.
