150th birth anniversary of Sri Aurobindo: PM chairs first meeting of High-Level Committee


Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the first meeting of the High Level Committee (HLC) which has been set up to commemorate 150th birth anniversary of spiritual and nationalist leader Sri Aurobindo.

The notification of the HLC was issued on 20th of this month and it comprises 53 members from various walks of life.

Sri Aurobindo is a renowned and important personality in the history of the Indian resurgence and Indian nationalism.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the esteemed members for their valuable thoughts and suggestions on Sri Aurobindo’s Commemoration. The Prime Minister said that the two aspects of Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy of ‘Revolution’ and ‘Evolution’, are of key importance and should be emphasized as part of the commemoration. The youth should be encouraged towards the concept of greatness as embodied in the philosophy of Nar to Narayan to create a MahaManav as propounded by Sri Aurobindo, he added.

About Sri Aurobindo

• Sri Aurobindo, original name Aurobindo Ghose, was born on August 15, 1872, in Kolkata. He went to England for education. After returning to India in 1893, he worked for the next thirteen years in the then Princely State of Baroda.

• In May 1908, Aurobindo Ghosh was arrested in connection with the Alipore Conspiracy Case or Alipore Bomb Case. He was defended in this case by Cittaranjan Das who had founded the Swaraj Party.

• Aurobindo Ghosh had called Indian National Congress a 'begging institute'.
• Among his many works are The Life Divine, Essays on the Gita , The Synthesis of Yoga and Savitri.
